Our Story

What started as a project to facilitate the development of technology standards became a new way for the Department of Defense to execute its most pressing research, development, and prototyping initiatives.

But the market drove ATI to be bold and think big. Industry and academia have long sought to support the warfighter through innovation – they just needed a better way to do it.

Since the very beginning, ATI existed to facilitate collaboration among industry, academia, and the Government. We believe this is the best way to drive real innovation, deliver better and faster solutions to our nation’s most challenging technology requirements, and enhance diversity within the U.S. technology supply base.

The rest, as they say, is history.

Our History

1980s SCRA’s ATI Division manages first R&D Collaboration

Collaboration is in our DNA. Before ATI was officially formed, we managed the Rapid Acquisition of Manufactured Parts (RAMP) Program. This collaborative effort brought together engineers from five companies to revolutionize manufacturing, starting with the Navy and eventually moving to the Army and others. And it was instrumental in establishing ATI’s core competency of consortium management. The just-in-time manufacturing method developed by this program replaced an outdated model of producing and warehousing lots of parts in case they were needed later for critical repairs. It is still in use at multiple military depots today.

1990 Disruptive Technical Breakthrough

Our second large program developed product data standards that share product information among supply chains. It’s unthinkable now that a complex system such as a plane, automobile, ship, electronic equipment, or appliance would be made without digital records. At the time, the creation of these standards was a disruptive technical breakthrough.

1998 ATI is Established

ATI (Advanced Technology Institute) was established in 1998 and incorporated in South Carolina. Effective July 1, 1998 the Advanced Technology Institute (ATI) became an SCRA affiliated, private, nonprofit corporation. ATI had 117 employees when it was founded.

1998 Our First Research OT Consortium

ATI is the consortium management firm for the National Shipbuilding Research Program (NSRP). This industry-led, Navy-sponsored collaboration of leading U.S. shipyards was ATI’s first Other Transaction Authority (OTA)-based consortium. Guided by a consensus Strategic Investment Plan, NSRP continues to develop new shipbuilding and repair technologies to reduce the total ownership costs of U.S. Navy ships.

2009 Our First Prototype OT Consortium

ATI is the consortium management firm for the industry-led National Armaments Consortium (NAC) and single point contractor for the DoD Ordnance Technology Consortium (DOTC). The early success of the NAC/DOTC enterprise led to the model proliferating across DoD and resulted in ATI having the privilege to ultimately serve as consortia manager for 14 OTA-based collaborations today.

2016 ATI Wins Award for 3rd Navy ManTech Center

ATI wins the award to manage its third Navy ManTech Center of Excellence. The metalworking program reflects and builds on the successful composites and shipbuilding COEs already under ATI management.

2017-2019 ATI Expands OT Portfolio Significantly

ATI expands its OT portfolio significantly and broadens our technology focus areas. New programs include the Information Warfare Research Project (IWRP) Consortium, the Undersea Technology Innovation Consortium (UTIC), the Aviation & Missile Technology Consortium (AMTC), the Countering Weapons of Mass Destruction Consortium (CWMD) and the Naval Surface Technology and Innovation Consortium (NSTIC). This leads to unprecedented growth in both employees and annual revenue.

2021 ATI Acquires TechConnect

ATI acquired TechConnect, the global research and innovation event leader with over 20 years of experience connecting emerging tech innovators with unique funding and partnership opportunities.

2023 ATI Becomes Standalone

ATI became a nonprofit organization with no owners and is no longer a subsidiary of ANSER.

2023 ATI Celebrates 25 Years

ATI celebrates 25 years of accelerating cutting edge research and technology for our nation, and stands ready to meet the challenges of tomorrow.

Today The Leader in R&D Collaboration Management

ATI is the leader in R&D collaboration management, and our current portfolio features 30 collaborations. We manage consortia with broad industry involvement in diverse focus areas, including: aviation, armaments, biomedical, spectrum, electronics, metals, information warfare, data, modeling and simulation, undersea, shipbuilding, sustainment, and more.
