This June, the Navy Surface Technology and Innovation Consortium (NSTIC) celebrates two years of supporting the Navy and the Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division by providing access to innovative technologies that address current and future threats in the surface and maritime environment. In two years, NSTIC has accelerated the collaborative development of innovative technologies needed by America’s naval surface forces. Here are some of NSTIC’s accomplishments.
Since June 2019, NSTIC members have received 27 awards totaling $275 million. NSTIC member project submissions may also be placed in a “basket” provision, meaning the proposals have gone through source selection and may be considered for up to three years after submission. This powerful tool allows the government to award Other Transaction Agreement (OTA) prototype projects quickly, and effectively use funds that may become available at a later date. To date, 376 proposals have been placed in the basket provision.
NSTIC’s 818 members are a mix of small and large businesses, nontraditional defense contractors, and academia. Small businesses make up 71 percent of the membership. Eighty percent of NSTIC’s members are nontraditional—organizations that don’t typically participate in federal research and development. Nontraditionals aren’t just the majority of members; they’re also winning the majority of awards. Seventy-eight percent of projects have been awarded to nontraditionals.
NSTIC looks forward to continuing to bridge the gap between government and industry through collaboration to improve naval capabilities and deliver innovative technological solutions to address security threats in the surface and maritime environment.
