ATI-Led Project Wins Defense Manufacturing Achievement Award

Welding Innovation Increases Efficiency and Reliability, Saves Millions of Dollars

Charleston, SC – ATI today announced that their “American Metalcasting Consortium – Castings for Improved Defense Readiness” Program won a Defense Manufacturing Achievement Award at the 2015 Defense Manufacturing Conference in Phoenix, AZ, December 1, 2015, for the development of new welding procedures and post-weld heat treatments that restore the mechanical properties of welded areas to the mechanical properties of the base metal, allowing steel items like armor to be thinner (lighter weight) and more reliable (less failures). This is the fifth award for the company in the past 5 years.

The ATI Team included Lehigh University and the Steel Founders Society of America working together with the Defense Logistics Agency, Eglin Air Force Base and BAE Systems to develop the new welding and heat treatment procedures. Projected savings after transition into industry is estimated at over $8.9M over a 5-year period.

The award is sponsored by the Joint Defense Manufacturing Technology Panel (JDMTP), and is given to teams comprised of both government and private sector members who are responsible for outstanding projects in manufacturing technology. Nominees are evaluated on three criteria: manufacturing technology achievement, transition/implementation and potential or realized benefits. The selection committee consists of the JDMTP Principals and the OSD ManTechdirector.

“We are delighted to receive this recognition,” said ATI Vice President Marty Ryan. “This project combines efficiency and cost savings with innovation that improves outcomes for our clients. We congratulate this team on another success story.”
